It’s Christmas At the Kings…and Imaginary Worlds

H & P….curious, eh? We do theme trees each year, and this year was my children’s choice.

Yes, the inside of our home has been transformed into the magical world of Harry Potter. As an author, I was thrilled when my children chose these magnificent books as the theme this year! I love Mr.Potter…having read the books more than a handful of times each.

Wands, potion bottles, owls, parchment, quills and ornaments to commend Gryffindor, Slytherin, Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw…all here. My kids worked so hard on this amazing tree!

In other news…

I have a new book releasing on December 10th, Absent Yet Present. It’s a novella, meaning a short read, but the proceeds made from this book will be donated entirely to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. This novel was written in memory of my boys’ best friend who lost his life to cancer two years ago at the young age of 10. I released the book trailer recently, and have already received incredible feedback. Take a peek here…

I am finishing the final edits to The Glass Castle Dream. As soon as this sweet little number is done, I have several publishing companies to beg and plead with contact about my manuscript. I received such incredible feedback while writing this amazing emotional love story online, my fans validated my reason for trying to get this novel on bookstore shelves and perhaps the movie theatre. I would NOT be here today without you!

I have been asked by several individuals as to when I plan on writing another online book. Well, I do have a story line already in mind, but I’ve got to complete my current project before moving forward.

Earlier this year I published my very first novel, The Gift of Fate, which is the first book in the Fatum Saga. I had pushed the second book in this amazing series aside to finish The Glass Castle Dream, but am finally back into the story, moving light speed ahead with a slew of new & old characters as this novel comes to life. I have become so attached to my characters that I find myself falling into their tangled stories nearly everyday when time allows. I adore the characters in the first book, but the 2nd book in this series is full of so many new faces, tribulations…and of course, romance! Swoon! Just wait, this new novel will rock your world in a profound new way. The Power of Suggestion is coming…..

And last, but certainly not least, this is why my blog has been so empty lately. Instead of writing posts, I’m working on books…for all of you. Pandora, Chai Tea and Peanut M&M’s have been my best friends over the past month.

I try and stay away from reviews online when it comes to my novels, but yesterday I took a peek. I was amazed and overwhelmed to see that The Gift of Fate is rated 4.56 out of 5 stars. WOW…speechless. As an author, I think the book is awesome, but I’ve seen how I’ve grown as a writer over the past year and a half. I can’t wait to get the second installment of this story in your hands now because of it.

Thanks for your continued support, the love you show this Southern author, and the willingness to put up with my sometimes, quirky ways. I don’t really mean sometimes…I mean always. {wink, wink}

Writing Like A Madwoman,

P.S. YES, I will be going to see the epic finale of this. Sorry, I am a Twi fan…for life.

There Are Valid Reasons As To WHY I’ve Been Hiding Under The Kitchen Table

I have been absent…yes. But I vowed to write a blog post to all my loves out there just so you’ll know that I have not run off of to Quebec with a band of gypsies. I’m here, head down, life rushing by at an astounding pace as I glance at the Christmas decorations strewn throughout Walmart in mid October. I’m sorry, I’m just not quite ready for Jingle Bells, Batman Smells, Robin Laid An Egg…

The end of the year always brings massive waves of busyness. And through all of the craze this homeschooling, working, writing mother finds herself in…she does stop to have a Pumpkin Spice Latte at Starbucks to reflect on the gifts that life has given her, is giving her…will give her.

Just so you know, here are a few things to expect from me within the next two and half months as we finish out 2012.

1) My birthday is Saturday. I’m turning 34. I feel 60, but I look 18. This was validated by my frequent “Can I see your ID?” moments in the check out line at the grocery story to buy a bottle of wine or a can of spray paint to re-do my outdoor patio table. At first I found it annoying, now I find it completely AWESOME. I pray they still ask me this 20 years from now.

Words to live by!

2) I have a brand new novella that is being published on December 10th. This book is very near and dear to my heart. It was written a year ago, and I am now bringing it to life in just a few short months. It’s called Absent Yet Present. This emotional, faith driven fiction story was written in memory of my dear sweet neighbor, and my boys very best friend, Andrew Pacocha, that lost his life to Leukemia two years ago at the age of 10. 100% of the proceeds of this book are being donated to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society in honor of Andrew and his family.

One of my son’s even wrote a poem that is included in this book. Yes, it is Christian fiction, and yes it is saturated in the faith of God’s amazing grace. This is how I felt led to tell his tale. Andrew’s battle brought countless individuals from around the globe to Christ through his illness, and it is my wish to allow his spirit to continue to flood the world through his story. I saw firsthand how this young man battled this horrendous disease…the fear that he felt, the pain that he endured and the uncertainty he faced day in and day out. But I also witnessed the community coming together to pray, to cater to his family and to fight with him, side by side. Even in loss, life is worth loving. More to come…including a book trailer of my testimony of how Andrew changed my life and the life of my children, and ultimately, why I HAD to write this book to honor him.

3) Were you a The Glass Castle Dream fan? If you were, you’re probably wondering where it went! Yes, it has disappeared from my blog. Pulled and tucked away until I can complete my edits before sending off to my editor in Canada. I received such an astounding flow or gracious comments and devoted fans from all over the globe, that I took this once “online novel only” to a whole new level. This time, I’m stepping outside the box and seeking a publisher for this book. Finding a publisher to even open your emails, yet alone, READ them…is very difficult. But thanks to all of you, you have proved that this story was not just another story. It has deep meaning and thousands of women connected with it. In that, I wish to share it with the world. Here’s to making that dream a reality! I will keep you posted on my progress. 🙂

4) My Pottery Barn post from last week was a HUGE hit! Thank you! I promise to bring another post to life in the next week. Several of you are begging me for more. I shall honor your “begging”. Hang tight!

Until then, keep your chin up and know I love all of you! I’m here…I’m just hiding under the kitchen table with my laptop and my iPod writing loads of goodies for all of you.

Hugs from the (almost) birthday girl ~

Who Doesn’t L.O.V.E. A Free Book?!

We all like…wait…love free books, don’t we? Especially in the middle of summer, when reading is on everyone’s radar. A great book is a must while lying on a beach, lounging by the pool, or simply curling up on the couch in the air conditioning and away from the 104 degree heat that lurks outside. Hey, remember, I live in Texas. It’s hotter than Hades here June-August.

Guess what? I released another book. My second book in four months. I’m shocked, blessed and somewhat bewildered at how the words just keep coming and the stories just keep developing.

I started a novella trilogy just a few short months ago. An idea that was found on an old flash drive. A story that was only half a chapter complete for years, but was finally finished a few short weeks ago.

Don’t know what a novella is? It’s longer than a short story, but shorter than a novel. It’s the perfect size book to finish in only a few sittings. Easy enough for you finish before your third margarita by the pool. Holla!

It is YA fiction. And yes, there is romance, heated passion and a love triangle…and angels and demons and the backdrop of a beautiful city. But overall, it’s a story about second chances and the gift of life.

This is book 1 of 3 in what I call, “The Unseen Wings Trilogy”.

I had an amazing editor in Quebec that helped me make it sparkle, and a company in London to help me convert my manuscript to a beautiful Amazon-ready eBook.

And now you can read it, share it and hopefully drool over it…for FREE today. Promise me something though, if you love it, will you tell somewhere where to find this crazy, funny and sometimes serious devoted author? And if you hate it, will you still love me anyway, because well…I adore having you around.

Grab it for FREE here!

If you feel like sharing this free deal on Twitter, please use the tweet below.

GUARDIAN by @valeriekingbook. Download it for free on @amazonbooks today! A tale of desire, deceit and a costly secret. http://amzn.to/MQuApf

And if you’d like to blog post it, Facebook it or shout if from the rooftops, I’m cool with that too. I appreciate the support! I write for you…not just my sanity.

Hugs and Kisses~

Writing Makes Room For New Ideas

Writing is not a habit, it’s a need that I have…that I crave…that I love.

There is rarely ever a dead-end street within the crevices of my mind. Lurking in the dark corners, I often find fragments to a story I feel is worth telling to others. A beginning piece to a beautiful novel often starts with one single image, flash of a face or word that crosses over me. More often than not, it happens at 2am, while waiting impatiently in the long line at the grocery store or when a song hits the radio waves on my iPod.

It is not rare for me to have 3-4 books in process at once. Hence…now. I have three on the table. One nearly complete, one 1/4 of the way done and another 1/2 way finished. I do find that I have to pull myself away from one or the other at times…writer’s block, it does exist. Skipping between novels allows an even broader range of creativity, and I love that.

I am currently 1/2 way finished with a new novella series entitled Unseen Wings. A story about a beautiful young girl who steps into the world of the Guardians, earth inhabited guardian angels, at age 19. A life full of riches, elegance and detrimental choices await her. Do you choose love or do you choose the life you’ve been given?

Becoming a Guardian means giving your life to another, a life in which you vow to protect, honor…to serve the soul you are bestowed. In this, you are giving forth the right to only administer protection to this one individual, eliminating the opportunity for direct involvement or deep interaction. We are to oversee; we are not to satisfy our own desires. – The Guardian Vow

The first novella in the series, Guardian, will be available soon. Upon completion, the book will be sold via ePub for free for all to enjoy. Book two will soon follow. Are you as excited as I am?! This story is ten years in the making. The idea found within the confines of an old flash drive a few weeks ago. Pretty awesome how book ideas can fall in your lap sometimes.

What drives your ideas, thoughts and pieces to your creative stories? Do you focus on one story at a time, or do you have a slew of unfinished novels on your hard drive?

Happy Wednesday! Now…back to writing.

Rejection, Tonsillectomy and Novellas

I struggled with whether or not I should write this post. But then I thought, “Put yourself out there and quit sitting in the corner sulking. What are ya, a baby?!” That depends…the past few days have been full of uncertainty, big decisions and little luck finding a Leprechaun at the end of a rainbow with a pot of gold. Okay…maybe not the latter.

My youngest little man has been suffering with constant sore throats and strep over the past 6-12 months. About every 4-6 weeks, those darn tonsils start giving us trouble.

Science lesson 101: Where are your tonsils and WHY do we have them.

Tonsils are the two bumps or rounds of tissue located in the back of the throat, and are made up of what is called lymphoid tissue. Lymphoid tissue produces lymphocytes — white blood cells that help fight infections. Traditionally, doctors would consider the production of lymphocytes a good thing, since it would seem to help people fight off illness with greater ease. But, many people suffer with constant bacterial infections and snoring at night, benefit from having them removed.

This is the boat we now sit in. We are “rowing” towards March 30th when these little mounds of infectious tissue are removed from my son’s throat. As a mother hen, I am a bit nervous about putting him under and having the doctor messin’ around in his mouth with a bunch of sharp knives, but the constant rounds of antibiotics and sick days on the couch need to come to an end. I am convincing myself of this through tears of uncertainty. Mr.Tissue and I have been friends for the past few days….

I really didn’t tell anyone except for a few family members…but I submitted my manuscript, The Gift of Fate, to a publisher a few weeks back. Even though I self-published, I wanted to see if there was any interest there. Well, there was…at first.

As an author, it is VERY difficult not to get your hopes up, especially when your story is acknowledged and there is a positive feeling that perhaps…this is the one. As many of you authors know, rejection is part of the game, but acknowledgement doesn’t happen often either. Most of the time your emails get sent out into some black hole that I KNOW resides above Barnes & Noble’s headquarters in New York. A swirling dark cloud of hopefulness from a world full of writers trying to follow their dreams.

Nope. A total let-down. I cried through a half bag of chocolate chips, a Dr.Pepper and threw a temper tantrum on the floor as my dog watched from afar, rolling her eyes at me yesterday.

It made me sad, it made me mad…it made me wish I had, a box of ziploc bags made by Glad.

I will NOT give up on writing though. I am passionate about it. I think I have a great story to tell, and I have a million more waiting to be written down. This is where the idea of novellas came in…

Short stories to a totally awesome series, now there’s a thought, Val!  After eating that bag of chocolate chips, I wrote down an idea for a novella…a slew of novellas actually, telling a sweet little tale about something totally unique and undeniably different than anything out there.

I am nearly complete with the 2nd book in the Fatum Saga already. Perhaps starting a new novella series on the side would be beneficial in polishing my writing skills as well.

At this point in time, I don’t need a publisher. I need to simply write and share what my heart feels. I’m going to STOP doing this…

And start doing this….

Happy Tuesday!
